Saint-Emilion 2006 classification

History of the classification

In 1954, at the request of the "syndicat de défense des vins de Saint-Emilion", INAO make the first ranking of the Crus of Saint-Émilion. INAO's decree said that every ten years the classification would be renewed. Only wines of the appellation Saint-Emilion Grand Cru can benefit from words "Grand Cru Classé" or "Premier Grand Cru Classé" according to official results. The revisions in 1969, 1979, 1984 and 1984, 1996 and 2006 slightly modified the original classification.

Nowadays, Saint-Emilion classification has 13 "Premiers Grand Crus Classés" with an total of 860 hectares.
The new classification of the 7th september 2006 promoted 2 wines to "Premier Cru Classé" B::
Château Pavie-Macquin and Château Troplong-Mondot.

The classification integrated 5 new Châteaux:
Château Bellefont-Belcier, Château Destieux, Château Fleur-Cardinale, Château Grand Corbin and Château Grand Corbin-Despagne.

13 Châteaux are pulled off the classification:
Château Bellevue, Château Cadet-Bon, Château Curé Bon, Château Faurie-de-Souchard, Château Guadet-Saint-Julien, Château La Clusière, Château La Tour-du-Pin-Figeac (Giraud-Belivier), Château La Tour du Pin Figeac (Moueix), Château La Marzelle, Château Petit-Faurie-de-Soutard, Château Tertre Daugay, Château Villemaurine and Château Yon-Figeac.

During July of 2008, Bordeaux court ruled that the 2006 St Emilion classification is invalid and can no longer be used.
Chateaux must now remove the classifications of Premier Grand Cru Classé A or B, or Grand Cru Classé - which should have applied from the 2006 vintage up to 2016 - from labels on wines dating from the 2006 vintage.
